In February 1735 a forty-five-year-old Swiss Immigrant was standing on the deck of a ship in Charles Town harbor. Martin Fridaig had just brought his wife and six children on this dangerous journey only to find that the" Township funds" were exhausted Martin and four other men petitioned the colonial assembly for funds to come ashore and settle in a township. The assembly granted this plea, and the funds along with sixteen muskets, and one-half barrel of powder these supplies the body delivered to the owner of a periague who was to transport the Swiss to the township of Saxe Gotha on the Congarees. This is the story of the journey and the period prior to the perilous undertaking.
