The results of Charlie's first attempts to investigate his past far from the brilliant make-believe of the City are, on the whole, disappointing. "I feel like I'm sitting in some old vehicle," he says, "listening to the wheels spin in the mud and staring out at the same dreary landscape. I'm not getting anywhere." But then the wheels start to roll, and soon they're rolling much too fast for Charlie's liking.
