If phrases like "Literature of the American South" or "Thematic Southern Literature" imply an emphasis on family, community, shared values, devotion to religion, racial tensions, the land and the power it brings, as well as an author who comes from that part of the country, then these fifteen short stories quality. Each is rooted in Georgia. But they just as easily could have germinated in the tradition-rich soils of Arkansas, Alabama, the Carolinas, Louisiana, Mississippi or Tennessee. They don't concern themselves with just the struggle and strife faced by the southern family in the 1930's. They highlight the people's goodwill, inner strength, mutuality and good humor - qualities which serve us well, regardless of where our roots are found. Perhaps what makes them most engaging is that each is inspired by actual events.
