The story is based on the real life experience of the author at the age of ten when she was learning to ride her horse, Sox. It takes place in the South Branch Valley of West Virginia. The main character, Connie Murphy, begs her parents for a horse. On Christmas morning, she gets the horse of her dreams but finds herself afraid of him.
