Why do states enter "special relationships" instead of taking up "normal relations"? To what extent do autocratic and democratic regimes build different forms of special relationships along different pathways? Examining a variety of theoretical and methodologogical approaches approaches, this book explores the gestation, evolution and effects of special interstate relations. The contributions suggest that special relationships between the same regime type are neither all evil or all vituous. Furthermore, they argue that their structuration effect on international relations is better understand when the interaction between regime type and the international society is accounted for.
