A story of individual loss, of the suffering inflicted by war, and of how a woman learns to survive both. It is 1918. The war that has been ravaging Europe is nearly over, and eight-year-old Kitty can look forward to growing up in a world where peace will be restored. The kindliness of the Sussex countryside, her well-to-do parents and, above all, her adored brother offer her all the safety and happiness she needs to begin the work of becoming an accomplished young lady.
