The 10th (Service) Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment was formed at Winchester in August 1914, the month that the Great War broke out. Their first posting was to Dublin, as part of the 10th (Irish) Division. The battalion moved to Mullingar in September. In march 1915 they moved to the Curragh camp and in May 1915 returned to England. In July 1915 the battalion sailed from Liverpool via Mudros and bound for Gallipoli, where they landed at Salonika. The 12th (Service) Battalion was also formed at Winchester in August 1914 and by November they were in billets in Basingstoke, moving to Bath in March 1915. The battalion landed in France in September 1915, and from there were sent to Salonika on the Macedonian front. This history gives in diary form an informative account actions both small and large, the narrative gives individual names and decorations given for specific actions.
