The mystery of Hadad the Edomite and his role in opposing Solomon has taxed scholars for generations. Edom and the land of the east were well known for their wisdom producing such sages and Job and Eliphaz the son of Esau. Now out of the land of Edom has a risen a man who through his alliance with Egypt and Syria has produced a formidable threat to the gold of Solomon's temple. Indeed within five years of Solomon's death his exquisite temple in Jerusalem was raided by Shishak the Pharaoh of Egypt. In addition his kingdom was split in two. The Egyptians had hosted Jeroboam son of Nebat who led the revolution in the north, and left with ten of the twelve tribes of Israel. He owed them! Shishak took the gold and this was according to the author a mercy from Yahweh for Israel had turned from following him.
