Enlisted in the Army and was sent to Italy, where he reported for an Army newspaper and married. Earned his Ph.D. Taught for a third of a century at the University of Pennsylvania. Wrote six books, including this one and a history of the world. As you see then, these are the memoirs of a history professor. But you'll find this brief self-story engaging and illuminating.
