Beskrivelse
This volume consists of 32 stories arranged from youthful vignettes, to early stories, mid-career stories, and late stories. The settings vary from the author's boyhood in North Carolina to Texas where he spent 38 years. With great realistic detail, the stories explore the encroachment of experience upon innocence, the mutability of human consciousness, the interior life of dreams and aspirations, feelings and impressions as well as objective facts. Some of the major influences upon Mr. Autry's writing include Thomas Wolfe, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, J. D. Salinger, and Virginia Wolfe. Mr. Autry says that "I still laugh out loud as I reread my satiric stories where I am never bitter but bemused about the human race's foibles including my own foolishness." This edition does not reprint any of the stories published in Calendar Stories: A Novel, Mr. Autry's homage to Sherwood Anderson and Ernest Hemingway.
