Cigarette smoking can exert an effect on periodontal tissues are not completely understood but it is clear that it is still the most significant preventable risk factor for periodontitis.If we are to pursue our strategies of prevention, early detection of disease and prompt intervention then the dental profession should continue to target and educate our young patients about the effects of smoking on periodontal health. In this way dentistry will also be making a significant contribution to the general health and well being of our youth and future generations.
