There were obstacles though, in term of Hammond's love to a popular club singer, Belle Yorke. Meanwhile there were also rumours circling around of Miss Yorke being patronized by a wealthy man. As for her ladyship cunningness to thwart this obstacle; she obtained the mean by hiring Yorke to sing at her private salon party and inviting Hammond at the same time. There were 2 million pounds at stakes and a future of political advantage to be gained from the alliance of oldest peerage family and of a new money family.
