Single Moms In Africa: 25 Shocking Stories Of Pain And Sheer Resilience

When I look at the 25 single moms who wrote their stories here, I see the shackles they must break every day just to stand up. When I see them smiling, having read their stories, just know how far they had to go to bring that smile to the surface, it melts my heart. When I hear them talking, I also feel the weight of every word they say; words pregnant with history and the unsaid.

Last year, I encouraged single moms on my Facebook Page, Single Moms' HeartSpa, to write their stories as part of their healing process. 25 of them took the challenge, and what I read horrified me and increased my admiration for the resilience of single moms in Africa.

Their stories are riveting, triggering, angering and revolting, yet inspiring.

All the proceeds from this book go to these courageous and selfless moms, who, although failed by the system, are doing everything in their power to raise the next generation with poise and dignity.

They are courageous, enterprising and eager to work on their empowerment but are cast away, marginalized and stigmatized for standing up for themselves and running away from untold abuse.

Where they live, the label single mom is like a curse. Their societies would rather they died married to men who are not accountable to anyone, who lord over women and abandon their children without any qualms.

This is where these single moms come from. I see this book as our contribution to uplifting them and their children, to indicting the systems that perpetrate abuse and hopefully to bringing awareness and inspiring action.
