Oral literature is a broad genre and it includes a wide range of literary pieces such as ritual texts, curative chants, epic poems, musical genres, folk tales, creation tales, songs, myths, spells, legends, proverbs, riddles, tongue-twisters, word games, recitations, life histories or historical narratives. In a more precise way, oral literature refers to any form of verbal art which is transmitted orally or delivered by word of mouth. Oral Literature is a means of preservation and transmission of social, beliefs and practices of traditional society. For societies in which traditions are conveyed more through speech than through writing, oral literature has long been the mode of communication for spreading ideas, knowledge, and history. In most cases, such traditions are not translated when a community shifts to using a more dominant language. Oral literature forms are in decline as a result of a cultural focus on literacy, the disappearance of minority languages and the upsurge of modern world technology.Oral literature, though in an indirect way, is very prevalent in the modern world. This type of literature defines, interprets, and elaborates on the society's vision of reality and the dangers in the world. It deals with the human adventure and achievements against odds. Through the texts of the society's rituals and ceremonies the ecological elements that are critical to the society's livelihood are portrayed and their functions sanctified.
