The individual is not only obligated towards others, but also towards himself. For there are moral reasons due to which people have to respect themselves. Among them is the duty to take oneself seriously. By degrading oneself, one thus fails oneself. This also has repercussions for political institutions because they shall create conditions, under which people can responsibly treat themselves.
