V. Madhusoodanan Nair, born on February 25, 1949 at Aruviyodu, a
small riverside village near Neyyattinkara, in Thiruvananthapuram, is an
accomplished, highly respected Indian (Malayalam) poet and critic of Malayalam
literature, who is credited with contributions in popularizing poetry through
recitation. He is best known for Naaraanathu Bhranthan, the poem with the most
editions in Malayalam literature as well as his music albums featuring recitations of
his own poems and poems of other major poets. Kerala Sahitya Akademi honoured
him with the annual award for poetry in 1992. He is also recipient of many other
honours including Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram, Balamani Amma Award and
Valmiki Puraskaram etc. He received the Central Sahithya Academy Award for
Literature -2019 (for Poetry) based on his work 'The Home Where Father Was Born'
This is the seventh in the series of translations of 'Selected Poems' of famous
Malayalam Poets that Mr. PKN Panicker presents to the enlightened readers who may not know
Malayalam but interested to read, understand and appreciate Malayalam poetry. Poets
covered in the earlier volumes are A. Ayyappan, Vailopilli Sreedhara Menon,
P.Kunhiraman Nair, Akkitham, Vishnu Narayanan Namboosdiri and Sugatha kumara.
It is Mr. Panicker's sincere belief that transporting the works of our authors into other languages
and in particular to English is the only way to take them to the parlors of world
poetry that made Mr.Panicker to undertake this venture. Among the widely used languages
Malayalam has the 29 th position and is one among the more vibrant languages rich in
thought and expression.
