Welcome to the World Canvas. I'm Maurllan. You are also going to meet Rouenda Anacrusis Everett, Editor-in-Chief at STUNNED Magazine. Rou is my romantic nemesis. Her career change is my bad. I really thought we were done two years ago, says the snake to its tail.

He might be handsome. His left fingers and thumb gripped the left handle of the double swinging doors, chill fall temps in the brass, and immediately felt the mild jolt of impending change. The man strolled into the impulse-buy foyer. The interior door was warmer under the fingers as he pulled the next D-shaped handle and stepped into the familiar ritual grounds of books offered for sale, and stopped. His nose was teased by the sweet lactose smell of scalded milk, dark chocolate, and espresso. The ears adjusted to the hissing Steam Punk machine seen beyond tables stacked with recent books. Tantina the barista smiled and waved her right hand at his entrance. He nodded cordially, felt the energy touch of their shared smile...
Rou yawned, stretched her arms back with bent elbows and clenched fists while her right heel tensed straight. She relaxed in the chair. She might be attractive. There was a familiar layout of newly released books on tables, green branding accents on the walls, a nearby smell of coffee. The oval area surrounding her was occupied by delicacies in racks, and a sales counter attended by a barista with unkempt strawberry curls and acne on the cheeks near the nose. Rou wondered why she was in a book store. One should never doze in a store, she felt, and worried for the moment why she would have today. Was there something medically wrong? The chair was an overstuffed lime green vinyl and the comfortable snuggle must be why she had dozed. Two kids shrieked briefly in the music area, instant shushing heard - did Rou have them to thank for waking her? Not that she was bitter; safety first when in public...
The Secret of Chocolate (Series). A preternatural Author (Maurllan) thins the Fourth Wall so Readers and Cast can interact. With the spell in motion, though, he realizes Cast and Readers also engage directly with him. Complicating matters further, an up-and-coming Author finds herself caught in his storytelling, while an Editor-in-Chief refuses to edit herself out of the series. The multi-thread tug-of-war over story genre and gender dominance threatens to disrupt the World Canvas, and limiting new Readers is only a short-term solution.
