Giovanni Spadolini took over the direction of the newspaper "Corriere della Sera" in 1968, dedicating the majority of his editorials to the intricate problems of domestic politics. Spadolini left the paper in 1972, and his farewell editorial emblematically recapitulated the criteria that had inspired his work over the preceeding four years. Spadolini fought to elevate the quality of the daily press as the only means for its survival against other mass media, underlining the important dignity of free journalistic expression, a message that has lost none of its prophetic significance.
