If you're a Sands this book is for you! Born in 1774 along the Greenbrier Valley of Virginia, now West Virginia, Matthew Sands married and raised a family through the "Year without a Summer" in 1816. His grandson, Samuel Field(ing) Sands, enlisted to support the War for Southern Independence with the confederated states. Their farms were along the Elk River in Braxton County, West Virginia. Ancestors stretch back in time to the 1st Baron of Sandys, Sir William Esthwaite Sandys who was born about 1500 and died about 1548. He married Lady Margaret Braye Dixon. Listed descendants stretch to Illinois, Florida, Tennessee and beyond. The book provides excellent starting points for further research. A great resource for the Sands family historian!
