In Book 1, The Sacrifice, fourteen-year-old Meriani learns the horrible truth: that her father has pledged her as his next sacrifice of thanksgiving Knowing that their people do not make human sacrifices; and believing that she will save her father from a huge mistake, she dares to go against her father's wishes and flees the village in order to save her life.
