Caroline Phillips believes she will be spending the rest of her life with Bill Kincaid, the first man she falls in love withuntil the Vietnam War gets in the way. A week before Bill and Caroline are to be married, Bill receives his draft notice. The couple elects to postpone the wedding. Caroline knows he might come back a changed manif he comes back at all. While waiting for him to return, she decides to get a real estate license and start a new career. Upon passing her exam, she is immediately hired to work not as a real estate agent, as she had planned, but as a quality control personobserving the firms agents and reporting back on their performance to Derek Dawson, the handsome young son of the firms owner.
