Rimas y leyendas combines poetry and prose as equally worthy outputs of the author's imagination. Many of the poems have had immense influence on modern poets, while the Becquer's prose resembles the rational Gothic style of Poe and Hoffman. All of the writing in this work revolves around Romanticism's treatment of superstitions and the limited abilities of the human mind to understand the wonders of the world.
