For centuries, magic in the Eternal City has been limited to folk magic known as the benedicaria. Witchcraft has been banned, and violating the rule will get a witch expelled from the ruling class. When purple flames begin sprouting up all over Rome, the magical families turn to a brand new fixer to handle the problem. Blacklisted Archaeologist Dr. Arienne Cerasola is officially the first name in magical disasters, but this is the first time she's not responsible for causing one.

Ari's been hired to put an end to the antics of the jinn before the human world gets curious. It's also her job to find the cause of the magical blackouts that are leaving the city vulnerable. Having magic go on the fritz isn't good when the Chanson du Bastille is trying to take over the country's magical practice. In order to maintain the balance of power, Ari will have to confront magical creatures, find ancient relics, and figure out a magical mystery of epic proportions.
