Terrifying raids, thousands of bombs and countless petrified inhabitants of Britain’s busiest cities. These are the prevailing images of the Blitz and the Home Front in the Second World War. Surviving the Home Front explores through contemporary newspaper reports and advertisements the effect the Blitz had on issues as varied as fashion, food, transport and more. It explores how facets of humanity showed themselves through individual tales of heroism, eccentricity and humour, but above all Stuart Hylton shows how the irrepressible spirit of the British people overcame a period of harsh austerity combined with the fresh terrors that appeared in their skies almost every night.
