Rose Gilbert was a successful young medic and an eye surgeon in training, until professional burnout changed her life forever. The increasingly noticeable change in her health led her to take a career break from medical training to seek answers to her own health issues. In her search for personal healing, she explored alternative and integrative approaches to health, and discovered healing as taught by the traditional shamans of Latin America. Fascinated by these traditions, she wanted to experience them first-hand and spent a month in Peru with the indigenous people of the Amazon jungle and of the mountainous Andean region, learning about their traditional culture of shamanism and plant medicine.
