Iain James meets Layla Black when she is only thirteen. Rationally speaking, everything about being involved with her is wrong, from her age to her careless attitudes about love and commitment. Still, Iain feels that he can't live without her, to a degree that is hard to understand. Their fragile union falls apart, and he is devastated when she leaves him.
