In Apples for Sale, Rebecca Sampson (*1984) sheds light on the life of Indonesian housemaids, who work in Hong Kong as second-class migrants and live under precarious conditions in a parallel female society. In an exclusively female social environment, they begin a sort of role play, in which the male roles of tomboys are assumed, and lovingly decorated dolls replace missing children. Since the domestic workers are only allowed to move freely around Hong Kong one day a week, their social and cultural sphere is increasingly shifted to the virtual world of Facebook.
