The study of prophecy deepens and broadens our communion with God, helping us understand that Christ is humanity's only hope in a world destined for destruction. If we truly appreciate the implications of the prophecy, we will live apart from that world around us.
Undoubtedly the most important passage that comprehensively addresses the theme of the great tribulation is the Lord's discourse on the Mount of Olives. Let's see it from a bird's eye view.
An analysis of Matthew 24 and 25 could initially distinguish three sections:
The coming of the Lord in relation to the Jews, 24.1-44
The coming of the Lord in relation to the professing church, 24:45 to 25:30
The coming of the Lord in relation to the Gentiles, that is, the nations, 25.31 to 46
A proper understanding of Matthew 24 helps in the interpretation of many other portions of Scripture, and one must bear in mind that the character of Christ set forth in this Gospel is that of the Messiah of Israel. The entire Gospel of Matthew deals with the question of whether the nation of Israel would receive him or not.
