First published in 1998. This is the final volume of eighteen in the political sociology series. Using past fairly well-equipped accounts of the acquisition of independence by former colonial countries, the author seeks to fill the gap of comparative studies which endeavour to find the elements common to the various stories and to bring to bear on the whole complex process the light of political sociology.
