Ourmaingoalwastohaveaconcisetextthatwouldcovertheclassicaltools ofPDEtheorythatareusedintoday'sscienceandengineering, suchaschar- teristics, thewavepropagation, theFouriermethod, distributions, Sobolevspaces, fundamentalsolutions, andGreen'sfunctions. WhileintroductoryFouriermethod -basedPDEbooksdonotgiveanadequatedescriptionoftheseareas, themore advancedPDEbooksarequitetheoreticalandrequireahighlevelofmathematical backgroundfromareader. Thisbookwaswrittenspeci?callyto?llthisgap, sat- fyingthedemandofthewiderangeofenduserswhoneedtheknowledgeofhow tosolvethePDEproblemsandatthesametimearenotgoingtospecializeinthis areaofmathematics. Arguably, thisistheshortestPDEcourse, whichstretchesfar beyondcommon, Fouriermethod-basedPDEtexts.
