The narrative is presented as a transcript of an MTV-style "oral history". Daisy Jones is the daughter of affluent, gorgeous, but uncaring parents. Simone, an older disco star, pushes her to pursue a career in music. Daisy's manager is Hank Allen, and she joins Runner Records. Billy and Graham Dunne are the Dunne Brothers, a blues-rock band from Pittsburgh.

Billy proposes to Camila, his girlfriend, and they marry. Billy cheats on Camila many times, but she always catches him. He begins to abuse heroin, but after the birth of their daughter Julia, Billy enters rehab and becomes sober. Teddy offers Daisy Jones as a female duet partner for The Six. Daisy modifies the words to the song, but they butt heads, but the song is a success.

Daisy joins The Six on tour as an opener, but Billy is leery of her since she's an addict and he's clean now. As Daisy leaves Hank, he takes her band with him. Billy eventually joins her on stage, and she sings several of The Rolling Stones songs, performing a version of The Six with Daisy Jones and The Six. Billy and Daisy begin creating songs for their debut album together, but Daisy is still erratic due to her drug use and partying. Daisy rushes off to Italy and marries Nicky, an Italian prince, on the spur of the moment.

With the release, the band becomes well-known, and Nicky is with Daisy, encouraging her drug use. Daisy discovers she is in love with Billy as their friendship develops. Billy has romantic emotions for Daisy, but he knows Camila is the one he desires. Daisy resumes using when Teddy dies of a heart attack, and Camila urges her to quit the band and get clean. Daisy leaves the band the next day, and the remainder of the tour is canceled.

Julia, Billy's daughter, is revealed to be the author of all of this in the book. Daisy eventually cleans up, and Camila sends a message to Julia 33 years later, just before she dies from Lupus.
