Deep Forest is a reverie on nature. The titles of the works reflect my feeling of deep connection to the beauty and wonder of the forests, oceans, and lands of our natural world. It is my wish to share this connection through these pieces, to create a bridge between ourselves and the magic of our surroundings through music. The natural world is our home and it seems to me that music is the poetry of our home.
As a student, I was deeply influenced by Ligeti's Piano Études and inspired by the music of minimalist composers Ann Southam, Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Looking for ways to introduce my piano students to these rich soundworlds, I set out on a project to compose pattern pieces in a minimalist style that might be more accessible for students and that could possibly act as a bridge to these other composers and their beautiful (and often monumentally-difficult) works. This book of 9 pattern pieces is the end result. They are written at a late intermediate to advanced level.
