Sawyer, nicknamed Tripp, is the oldest son of the Beauregard family. He is a career military man as a Colonel in the United States Army. Other than attending his father's funeral five years ago, he has not been home in decades. But Sawyer receives an urgent call from his younger sister explaining that there is a family emergency and he is needed at home.
The skeletal remains of a corpse have been uncovered, and with the body, long-buried secrets. Sawyer is thrust into the role of patriarch at the family farm. In Venice, Mississippi, Sawyer rekindles his friendship with a local deputy, Grady, and discovers the depth to which his family will go to maintain their position in society. All while dealing with his own demons, Sawyer struggles to hold his family together and protect them from an unknown assailant. And, to complicate matters further, Sawyer is instantly attracted tothe town's bookstore owner, Diane.
As Sawyer returns to civilian life, he finds himself wishing for the battlefield, where everything is black and white. Instead, he finds himself navigating the gray areas of love, loyalty, betrayal, and sacrifice- a far cry from the peace he seeks.
