The lively characters from Payne's Song are back in the action packed sequel. It's the turn of the century and they are all grown up. (Well, Almost.) Payne and Skeeter are back in the Texas Hill Country and they have not one, but two Kentucky Derby hopefuls. But there is trouble brewing at Starlight Stables. Red Phillips has been released from prison and has vowed revenge on the little smart-mouth jockey who put him there. From Texas to Churchill Downs, the race is on. The stakes are life and death, and all bets are off as the characters make the final turn and the hooves thunder towards the finish line.
