This 1873 novel features a young woman, Elfride Swancourt, who must choose between two suitors. Stephen Smith is an ambitious architect's assistant whose father was a mason. Henry Knight is older and of the upper class. Elfride finds her heart torn by her feelings for both men . . . and the necessity of choosing between them.
