The first two volumes of this handbook - planned to contain four volumes - were hailed by the scholarly press as an authoritative work on the European history of education, and acclaimed it as setting new standards in its unsparing analysis and its absorbing text. The third volume deals with the history of the field of education at the Universities of Salzburg and Linz up to the present day, as well as at the University of Czernowitz from 1875 to 1918. Every person who taught education is considered. With what previous training and by what career paths did they become lecturers or professors? How did they interpret their subject and what did they achieve? In the development of education as an academic subject, what role did the university departments play, the ministry of education or politicians? What expectations were raised and what results were achieved? This critical review will be of help to all who are interested in or responsible for educational policy.
