Beskrivelse
Lighthouses were originally built to guide mariners on their journeys and to help them avoid hazards of the seas. This book focuses on the lights in the New York Metropolitan area ... New York City and Long Island. We start in the borough of Manhattan where we visit six locations. From there, we drive south onto Staten Island for five more towers. After traveling to the Bronx for one tower there, we head out to Long Island. The next three towers are in Nassau County, two on islands in the Long Island Sound and one on the mainland. Even this one must be seen from a boat. Our final fifteen stations are all in Suffolk County. The first twelve of these are on Long Island's north shore in or along the Long Island Sound. Seven of these must be seen from the water but several cruise lines offer excursions that routinely pass these locations. We then head to the South Fork to catch the next three stations, including the Montauk Point Lighthouse which appears on the cover of this book. We finish our journey at the Fire Island Lighthouse on the south shore.
Each entry will give directions on finding that structure, pertinent information on it and other interesting facts about it as well as a full-page color photograph of the tower. Whether you are a lighthouse aficionado who loves chasing these classic structures and or a young family on a budget who is looking for a low-cost tourist option, everyone should find something of interest in these pages. Above all, enjoy the lighthouses.
