Willi Wissemann returns to Germany, escaping French captivity and the prospect of languishing in a POW camp. He is determined to settle down-marry his fianc e, take an instructor's job, and retire from air combat all together. But fate has other ideas. Devastated by a personal calamity, he slips into inexorable bitterness. His differences with Oberst Thomsen come to a head. In a rapt moment of bitter hostility, he lashes out and suffers grave consequences. He's officially court-martialed, demoted, and sent back to the front. At the front, he takes out his frustrations on the French Air Service, gunning down the enemy wholesale and running up a incredible victory score. Wissemann is a changed man as well, no longer vying to be the quintessential German officer. He butts heads with his Jastaf hrer, drinks heavily, and becomes daring beyond reason. Thus, he comes to the attention of aircraft manufacturer Anthony Fokker, during the maligned debut of the much anticipated Dr-1 Triplane. What eventually transpires puts Wissemann back in the good graces of the Air Service, the High Command, and his old Jasta. All in time for Germany's greatest offensive, a do-or-die drive on Paris that will hopefully end the war and bring Germany complete and utter victory.
