Observations on World Music

The music of Nonwestern cultures may at first seem strange, exotic, or even incomprehensible if heard through uninitiated Western ears. However, with additional knowledge and increasing familiarity, music that once seemed strange can be understood, appreciated, and enjoyed. This book explores the musical instruments of Nonwestern cultures, with first-hand information on how these instruments are constructed and played, examining their role and function in the context of the culture of their origin. Each instrument is presented with detailed photographs and thorough explanation.
