The sixties, seventies and eighties were decades of great change in Preston. This period saw major city centre redevelopment projects that dramatically affected its character. People's shopping habits began to change as supermarkets took over from traditional stores and corner shops. Leisure habits were changing too, and Preston saw major town centre redevelopments. Transport also evolved. A move away from the railway put a greater strain on the roads and the major new road schemes only compounded the changing face of this Lancashire town, which became a city in 2002.
