Notes from the Margin

NOTES FROM THE MARGIN is about the subjective experience of feeling like an outsider. Through personal and sometimes humorous stories and real-life examples, author Katherine E. Mezei explores some situations in which we may temporarily choose to withdraw, and others when marginality is imposed. At times we choose to find respite from the demands of relating. At other times it feels as if the universe is conspiring to keep us on the outside looking in. Examples may be big or small, life altering or simply distracting. What they have in common is that they are all intensely personal, unique and yet a part of our collective humanity. The experience of marginality may evoke feelings of isolation, loneliness, or despair. Or it may make us feel special, unique and valued.



Because these themes are part of every life at one time or another, readers will recognize themselves in many of the situations described, and will gain insights into the pull between apartness and inclusion at different life stages. We can recognize and honour the universality of the experience of marginality and allow ourselves to observe our own reactions. We can respect our need to take time apart, and reassure ourselves that we will find a way back to community and intimacy when the time is right and we are ready.
