Dan Barkan never saw it coming.
Not only did he not want to do it, but he never expected to be asked. Yet, on that cold February night, that's exactly what happened. They asked him to be president.
He volunteers in small ways at his synagogue in hopes to make a difference. However, his fellow congregants see him as empathetic and trustworthy and look to him for monumental changes in a community intrenched in traditions.
He is insecure and nervous. However, when he unearths illegal, immoral, and nefarious goings on, he soon discovers his lack of self-confidence is the least of his troubles.
The changes he seeks threaten the status quo. He knows they are bold, but he never thought the Rabbi and others in power would do just about anything to stop him. The Rabbi becomes desperate when Dan discovers a mysterious letter which points to damaging dark secrets of money laundering, manipulation, and marital affairs.
The Rabbi and his minions spread rumors and lies about him, his best friend Rick, and their cohort, the wealthy and gregarious hippie Jackie. He is even accused of murder. But when they threaten his family and his marriage to his supportive and loving wife Joy, he knows it's time to fight back.
He goes from humble volunteer to a bold leader in this thriller that culminates with the hero facing his nemesis in an angry and frightening confrontation fifty feet above the ground on which the community prays.
All he ever wanted was to make a difference. Now he's asking himself, was it really worth it?
