"We'll cut the deck. Low card clears the old man's plates."
"Aw, low card again." said William. He had been losing a lot at that game, lately. As William reached to grab the plate, the old man turned and looked right at him, eye to eye.
"Do you boys wanna hear a story?"
William froze. "Sure." William squeaked, his mouth trembling.
George cautiously leaned in to hear the man's words, but to make sure not to get too close.
Old Man Stephen began his tale, "During the war my friends and I would draw cards, just like you boys. But, for us low man would mean being in the front of the line."
George stammered, "Wha, wha, what line?"
"Why the fighting line." Stephen sputtered back, "not something as safe as taking an old man's dishes away."
Follow this journey of historical fiction of the beginnings of our New Hampshire history collaborated with my sons. We researched the military path based on four of our relatives in The Revolutionary War, including my great, great, great, grandfather's during that developing time of our country. He enlisted at age 15 and left his service forever lamed in the arm from the scourge of smallpox. At what price was his freedom?
