"This is an unabashedly optimistic old-fashioned pulpy action adventure with no moral ambiguity or sadistic violence. Purcell's unique voice is witty, and some of the wordplay is hilarious." Patrick Dorn, Amazon 5-star review's
It's the summer of 1941 and the Hollywood heroes battle against an occult evil during their most bizarre and dangerous adventure. Republic Pictures flack Curly Woods, studio chauffeur Nick Danby and western film star Hoot Gibson encounter supernatural beings, enemy agents with occult powers, alien monsters from another galaxy and a good-guy ghost from the future. The action starts on the first page and continues like a runaway stagecoach all the way to the exiting climax of "Mystery at Winchester House." The Cowboys are assigned to keep the peace during the filming of a 15-chapter Saturday matinee serial, "The Man of the Mist Strikes Back." The Republic stars, film crew and detectives are on location at one of the most haunted mansions in the United States, the infamous Winchester Mystery House, when an occult portal is opened and unearthly creatures invade our world. And the only way to destroy the monsters is for Hoot and Curly to cross over to the alien planet and fight them on their own turf.
This newest installment of the critically acclaimed HCD series explodes with pulp-action sci-fi western thrills reminiscent of the amazing Saturday matinee cliffhanger serials of the 1930s and '40s. Anyone who enjoys the death-defying action performed on the silver screen by the likes of Tom Mix, Buster Crabbe, Dick Foran, Clayton Moore and, yes, Hoot Gibson, will delight in the adventures of the Hollywood Cowboy Detectives. Former newspaper editor and political cartoonist Darryle Purcell also illustrates his Hollywood Cowboy Detectives and Man of the Mist books in the style of the classic pulp publications of the time.
"Fans of Cowboy action and adventure may want to check out Darryle's books." Flashback Universe"If you enjoy pulpy entertainment, check out Darryle Purcell's novels. At a time when many of us need a mental vacation from pandemic news and blues, they're your tickets out." Bob Deis, Mens Pulp Mags.
