Mont is a young man growing up in rural Pennsylvania in a world before the terror of the World Wars. As he makes the transition from boyhood to manhood, he discovers an overwhelming love for the game of baseball.

Then he discovers the life-changing impact of the love of a good woman and the passion that she brings into his life.

Ultimately, however, he becomes acquainted with the world-shattering reality and heartbreak of war as a soldier in the first World War.
