The Beast of Dartmoor has amazed audiences all over the world and evaded capture by big game hunters for decades. Thousands have seen it and many theories have been published about its origins. But no-one has ever been able to trace it back before the mid-twentieth century, until now. This book explores stories of the Phantom Dogs, Hell Hounds and Wild Hunts which have plagued Britain in general and Dartmoor in particular since 1127. Here, nineteen stories are presented all together for the first time. Through careful analysis and comparison the author traces the evolution of the legend from the shadow left by The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901, back to the earliest Dartmoor hound in 1830, and then back to the earliest Monster Hounds of Britain in 1127. The Black Mystery Cat of Dartmoor evolved from the Black Monster Hound of Dartmoor, and this book intends to prove it.
