Posthumously published in 1904, here is the first systematic history of the American militaryone which enormously influenced how the Army trained and deployed troops. Taking lessons from the Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Mexican War, Uptons theory was that the American army was weak because it was too much in the control of civilians.
