Traditional theory teaches enslaved Africans were the cheap, renewable labor resource that fueled the nation's fledgling economy...paving the way for unprecedented prosperity. Fetters of generational poverty, single parenthood, and high incarceration rates have now replaced the old iron shackles of chattel slavery. And increasingly, to be young, male, and Black is synonymous with courting death by execution at the hands of police. In fact, the status of African-Americans has diminished to the point we are now compelled to convince society that our lives actually matter. What is driving the adversarial force shaping the social, economic, and judicial policies affecting us?
