Beskrivelse

"Memoir of a Hooker" is a story of pleasure and pain, where lost ideals leave voids with moments of ephemeral fixes. It's a story of brutality, where the psyche is the victim and the mores of society the instrument of a besieging consequence; sparing some while impinging others with its stinging barbs of inequality. Buried so shallow beneath the consciousness of life's outer shell a truth lay upon the ground shaken from the tree of life like fresh fruit fallen from its branches. Through the life of a young man, who is weak in the area of passionate restraint, we witness his pursuit of pleasure as a vocation. In an almost altruistic way he plies his profession; giving relief to his clientele, he lifts them to the sublime height he thinks they deserve. His rewards are not only monetary, but spiritual. He justifies, not only his client's need for his services, but his actions in providing those services. His own attitude toward sexual promiscuity is blatantly hedonistic however his empathy for women prevents him from inflicting more pain than life has already dealt them. He truly sees women as the victims of a male dominated world from the beginning of time. Two dominant women emerge in his life and are central to the conflict that unfolds: One woman provides a reinforcement and is a participant in his professional life - determined and strong-willed. She keeps the pressure on for him to continue when he seems to want an alternative life. The other woman a seemingly gentle woman captures his heart. She creates in him an ambivalence to quit the life he has made for him self, even though he may not be ready to do so. It is a contest of strengths and weaknesses. A tribute to the ancient influence of Eros, the Greek God of Love, and the banal consequences of eroticism unfold. It is a story laced with deception. Not deception for the sake of treachery, but subterfuge to cover our cultural frailty. Culture that interacts one another in a world of demanding behavioral norms. We are not always as we seem. That goes without saying. Right? When we play to an apparition from a sense of counterfeit values the resulting pain is more deserving for its lack of honesty, and just as painful. In our world honesty is not always rewarded. The truth may set us free. Then again, it may not. As a witness to life's folly the central character of this memoir is a retired police officer.
