Melancholy

This work is based on the French poem Il Pleure Dans Mon Coeur (It Rains in My Heart). As expected from the title, this work has a dark feeling to it. Slow and brooding, the piano sets the feel with the soloist playing a slow, haunting melody. The middle section brightens, giving the listener a feeling of wistful hope, but this is short lived as the section ends with the soloist playing a meandering line, searching for an answer.
